How to Setup Electronic Prescribing

E prescribe  Compose Rx

The Compose Rx Page is the center of the NewCrop prescribing system; each new prescription begins here. Drug names are always selected from a list, derived from the master list of FDA-approved and available formulations.

Overview:

The grey area contains the prescription as it is being written. Below this is an allergy section with a memo field. The area below the Allergy section lists Current Medications.

Enter New Prescription

To enter a drug for a new prescription:

Type the first few letters of a brand or generic name into the text box on the left and click the Drug Search button or press the Enter key. Advanced accounts may also access herbal and OTC preparations.

When writing a prescription for a particular drug it will automatically be added to the doctor’s frequently used, labeled on the screen as Doctor's List.

Select the drug tablet size or formulation by clicking on the drug name, blue link. The Managed Care Formulary status will appear next to each drug and with any searched drug, if the Formulary feature is activated for your account and an insurance/formulary has been setup and selected for this patient or if this is an RXHUB patient.

Click the Drug List button to open the doctor’s frequently used, individual list of drugs. Select the drug by clicking the drug name, blue link. You can use the check boxes on the right and Remove From List button to eliminate seldom used choices.

If a drug is not listed, use the field at the top of the list to type several letters of the drug, then click the Search Drug button.

SIG: Enter the Sig, including PRN and DAW (dispense as written). Use the Number and Unit/Route/Frequency drop down pick lists. The dispense number for 30 days is displayed by default but may be overwritten or other duration selected with the blue links below the count. (OTC drugs do not require a sig or dispense number.)

Add complicated directions, such as an insulin dose in the Add’l Sig field.

Fill in packaging or other information in the Pharm. Message field.

Once a drug has been entered, you can use the Packaging options, below the Pharm. Message field, to display information on sizes of tubes and liquids and then replace the dispense #.

When the prescription is complete, click Proceed to Review. Advanced accounts will see results of review for allergy and drug-drug interactions.

Allergies

To record an Allergy, click on the Allergy/Intolerance Search button.

To enter an allergy type all or part of a brand or generic name or category (i.e. “sulfa”) in the Enter first few letters to search field and press the search button. Click once to select. The selection will be listed under the Allergy/Intolerance Search button with severity information included as entered.

To delete an Allergy you must click on the name of the allergy and in the Allergy Detail section click on the Delete This Allergy button.

Pending Prescriptions

Pending Prescriptions are displayed above the New Prescription Section. Each is labeled with a stage for where it is in the prescribing process.

DR means the Rx has been left by staff for doctor review.
NS means a doctor has approved the Rx and left if for the staff to process.
InProc is in-process or incomplete.

Pending Prescriptions have not yet been added to the Current Medications List, but are included in drug interaction checking on the Review Page.

Prescriptions from all doctors and locations within your account are seen. Prescriptions cannot be lost. If left partially processed on this or any other page, they appear here and are listed on the Status Page.

While in the Pending Rx list, prescriptions can be deleted by clicking on X button to the right of the prescription.

Current and Previous Medications

The Current Medications list shows, most recent first, prescriptions written by all doctors within your account.

To move discontinued medications to the Previous Medications list, click the check box(s) to the right of the medication(s), and then click the D/C button.

To view the medications you have moved, click the check box labeled Discontinued/Previous below the Current Medications list.

Change SIG

Current Medications can be altered if the patient is instructed to change the SIG.  Click on the Edit button for the medication, make changes (including Additional Sig). Click the Save button. A record of changes, including doctor and user is kept, along with pharmacy transmission information. To view the details of transmission and modification click on the magnifying glass icon.

Rewrite Prescription

In the Current Medications section or in the Previous Medications section, click on the checkbox in the pink column to select the drugs you wish to rewrite. Once the box(es) are checked click the Select button at the top of the column to move them to the Pending Rx section.

The Rewrite function provides a means to rewrite multiple prescriptions. (i.e. when a patient changes pharmacies.)   Select using the check boxes on the left and click the Select button. Prescriptions must be processed 'as is' in the Rewrite, meaning any changes made to the SIG will follow through the rewrite process.
