If your computer has more than one hard drive, back up onto a different drive from the one where you keep your working data. If you have only one hard drive, back up onto a disk or zip drive, if you have one.
Remember, an important reason for backing up data is to protect against a hard drive failure. We recommend that you make backups daily to keep in the office.
The first time you do a daily backup; make several sets of backup disks. Label your backup sets "Backup Monday," "Backup Tuesday," etc. At least once a week, make a backup copy to keep off your premises.
By using the database utilities to backup your databases, if you lose data for any reason, it can be restored from your backup copy.

The backup command does not simply copy the data from your database. Instead, it compresses the data into a compact file that is smaller than your database.
